Steven Holl Architects Celebrates Three Project Milestones
In Scandinavia
From May 26-30, Steven Holl, Principal of Steven Holl Architects,
and his associates attended three events to celebrate their
successful work in Norway (May 26), Finland (May 28) and Denmark
(May 30).
The trip began May 26 at the future site of the Knut Hamsun
Center in Norway. Commissioned to honor the Norwegian writer
Knut Hamsun, Holl attended the groundbreaking ceremony for
the structure, which will include exhibition areas, a library
and reading room, a café and an auditorium designed
to reflect and revitalize Hamsun’s writing.
Next, Holl attended the celebration for the 10th anniversary
of Kiasma, the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art in Finland
on May 28. The concept of Kiasma involves the building intertwining
with the geometry of the city and landscape, which are reflected
in the shape of the building. The rooms are rectangular with
one wall curved, which allows for a clean yet dramatic backdrop
for the exhibition of contemporary art.
Finally, Holl and colleagues launched the construction of
the Herning Center of the Arts in Herning, Denmark on May
30. The Herning Center of the Arts unites three distinct cultural
institutions: The Herning Art Museum, the MidWest Ensemble
and the Socle du Monday. The new center is intended to be
a forum combining visual art and music. Steven Holl Architects’
design fuses landscape and architecture in a one-level building.
The project will include permanent and temporary exhibition
galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, a
restaurant, a media library and administrative offices.

InformeDesign Releases Implications
About Design For People With Neurological Disorders
Human factors that designers
should consider when designing environments that will be used
by individuals with neurological disorders is the topic of
the latest issue of Implications, a monthly research
newsletter about design and human behavior published by InformeDesign.
This information is of special importance to designers who
create health care environments and other spaces frequently
used by children and the elderly.
There is a growing body of evidence linking
conditions such as asthma, autism and Alzheimer’s disease
to exposure to certain environmental attributes, such as heavy
metals and chemicals. Reducing additional exposure to harmful
substances through the use of natural products with simple
ingredients is one way that designers can positively affect
the health of these at-risk populations. Designers should
also familiarize themselves with the ways in which various
disorders can affect how an individual experiences a space.
While some disorders cause individuals to be overly sensitive
to environmental stimuli, for other cases they may barely
respond to environmental stimuli. Implications describes a
number of factors that designers should consider in assessing
how the environment might affect the occupant.

by conducting an all-day youth workshop for area students
ages 14-24. Design professionals exposed participants to the
design process and career paths as they coach teams in a hands-on
design competition. The aspiring designers and artists designed
several spaces including a dorm room and an art classroom,
and ASID member designers worked with the students on the
design concepts, space planning and building of the large
models.
Meanwhile, during a press conference, ASID and
the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced the first
green residential remodeling guidelines, REGREEN. Organized
into the ten most common remodeling projects, the REGREEN
Guidelines were created to provide professionals and homeowners
with resources and tools to green their home remodeling projects.
The guidelines can be applied to a variety of projects, from
remodeling a kitchen to executing a full-scale renovation.
